Soon We Will Be Able to Regrow Teeth

August 3rd, 2010 by admin

Most people never even thought that it would be possible at some point to regrow bad teeth. They just thought that since in the past people only got two sets of teeth (baby teeth and adult teeth) that was the way it had to be. Luckily some people starting thinking about the fact that some animals can grow many sets of teeth, and even some people have actually regrown an adult tooth that was lost, and wondering how that worked and whether there was some way to make it so that all people could do this.

Of course right now it is still not possible for most of us to regrow teeth. However, the technology is getting there due to all the avenues of research that are under way. In fact, it might only be a few years before you will be able to purchase a device that can help you grow a new tooth in about a year. Of course that is a lot slower than just getting a crown, but it would be a real tooth. The device uses something called a low intensity pulsed ultra sound. The ultra sound stimulates the root when you use it for twenty minutes a day, and eventually, a tooth starts to come out to replace the missing one. The original version was too large to be really useful, but it has since been miniaturized so it can attach to braces or be placed in a temporary crown that you would use for the year it takes to grow the tooth.

There is also research getting done on using stem cells in order to regrow teeth, and although this looks like it might have some promise it is still a ways from becoming reality since there are some difficulties that need to be overcome. They have been able to grow new teeth for mice using the process, however.

Finally, instead of getting your cavities filled with metal like we do now, you might soon be able to get a crystal made from a calcium solution put in your tooth that will remineralize it instead so that it is as good as new. You can’t grow teeth from scratch, but you can regrow teeth parts that are damaged.
